"Pluralism and Responsibility. Media in the Digital Society" – Kick-Off Event for the EU Media Conference
The digital conference series "Pluralism and Responsibility. Media in the Digital Society" - on the occasion of Germany's EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2020 - offers an overview of current challenges for the European media landscape and poses central questions about its future shape. The kick-off event took place on 7 July 2020.
The HBI will support the conference scientifically until 29 October 2020 and will promote the scientific discourse on the European media order in numerous digital focus sessions.
Following a video message by Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, Minister of State Prof. Monika Grütters, and the EU Commissioner for Values and Transparency, Věra Jourová, presented possible goals of a German and a European media policy in a discussion with Peter Limbourg, Director-General of Deutsche Welle.
Young international media researchers gave an impulse for the discussion that followed. At the Young Researcher Impact Workshop organized by the HBI at the end of March 2020, young researchers from various disciplines formulated statements and demands with regard to a new European media order. At the kick-off event, three of the workshop participants presented these statements on the conference topics via video messages.
