Ein Menschenrechts-Update für das Internet

Ein Menschenrechts-Update für das Internet

In his article on Tagesspiegel Background, PD Dr. Matthias Kettemann writes about the importance of digital rights. He argues that Germany has a unique opportunity right now to advocate globally for a human rights-based and development-oriented Internet policy. It is time for an update, he says.

Abstract
Should facial recognition be banned - or should we ban access to the Dark Net? Should we stop the trade with surveillance software - or promote European products on the world market? Does the Internet reinforce traditional patterns of domination - or is it an ideal medium for human rights defenders? The Human Rights Committee of the German Bundestag will deal with all these questions in a public session today. The MPs will not find an immediate solution to every question. However, the fact that they are being asked, and especially now, is particularly important. After all, Germany can make very decisive contributions to the future of human rights protection in the digital sphere and in the global order of the Internet in the second half of 2020.
