The international cooperation project investigates how the Internet has changed and will continue to change societies in the USA, Europe and China.
The worldwide diverse social use of the Internet has so far only been insufficiently researched. The project "The Peoples' Internet" (PIN) compares the current state and potential of the Internet in three centres of the world economy and world politics - China, Europe and the United States. It asks above all about the interaction of civil society with the two other key sectors of modern societies: the market and the state. For this purpose, the cooperation partners will conduct population surveys, ethnographic studies and big data analyses.
In Germany, a representative survey was carried out in June 2018 (n=1517; YouGov Online Access Panel). The following information was collected:
- Media usage (video, audio, text, games in min.),
- Communication with other persons (different reference persons, communication channels)
- Online use (devices, first time, frequency, different levels of information search),
- Social media (with whom, why, how often, how, degree of anonymity),
- The role of the Internet in quality of life,
- Information search in various everyday scenarios,
- Sense of belonging (local, regional, national, cultural communities).
