Overview Study Digital Methods

Computational Social Science' (CSS) has established itself as a new scientific subfield in recent years with the increasing digitalisation of society. In CSS, different disciplines, each with different subject traditions and scientific understandings, come together to investigate social processes and phenomena with the help of computer methods such as network analysis, text and data mining or computer simulation. In the course of technological progress, the importance of the systematic analysis of very large digital data sets has in particular increased.
 
Similar to other social science fields, CSS methods can make a major contribution to broadening the spectrum of methods for technology assessment as a sub-field of technical sociology. In order to take a closer look at this possible methodological contribution, we are preparing a study that will provide a comprehensive and compact overview of methodological approaches of CSS for the planned use in technology assessment. The planned study will include the following focal points:
  • State of research on CSS methods,
  • A compilation of central actors and institutions in the field of CSS,
  • A summary of the methods suitable for TA, including a description of the effort involved,
  • Research of relevant projects and case studies, if possible, with TA relevance.
