For five months, Anne Kaun, professor at Södertörn University in Stockholm, will conduct research with us as a fellow at the HBI. We are delighted about this international cooperation!
Her research interests include media theory, mediated temporalities, algorithmic culture, automation and artificial intelligence from a humanistic, social science perspective. She is currently working on several comparative projects exploring the implications of the digital welfare state from a citizen perspective.
During her guest fellowship at HBI, Kaun is working towards a monograph tentatively entitled “The Data Welfare State - The Consequences of Automated Decision-Making for Democratic Values” in which she synthetizes her research on digitalization in the context of welfare provision. She is drawing here in particular on survey material among citizens in Estonia, Germany and Sweden as well as case studies of automation and datafication projects in public administration in the three countries.
Career
Since 2015, Anne Kaun is a lecturer at the Department for Media and Communication Studies at Södertörn University. In 2021, she was promoted to Full Professor in Media and Communication Studies. Prior to joining Södertörn, she held various research and teaching positions including visiting lecturer at the Department for Media and Communication Studies at Karlstad University and visiting post-doc at the Center for Global Communication Studies at the Annenberg School for Communication (University of Pennsylvania).
Anne Kaun holds a Master’s degree in Media and Communication Studies from the University of Leipzig, Germany, as well as a degree in European Studies from the Technical University of Kaliningrad, Russia. In June 2012, she was awarded her PhD from University of Örebro in cooperation with Södertörn University. In 2010, she was an associate research student at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
