8th Hamburger Mediensymposium [Hamburg Media Symposium], organised by the Hans-Bredow-Institut, the State Media Authority of Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein (MA HSH) and the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce on the question how digitisation changes public communication, on 13 June 2017 at Hamburg Chamber of Commerce.

Fake news, hate speech, social bots: the mechanisation of public communication shows many, mostly negative phenomena. Usually, technical systems are identified as the cause, even if they show or reinforce only actual social problems.
How big data and algorithms can develop potentials for the (communicative) common good is shown by the current cooperation of the Hans-Bredow-Institut with the Department of Informatics at Universität Hamburg. The Hamburg Media Symposium 2017 will illustrate these potentials with selected examples and fields of application.
At the beginning of the symposium, a software tool will be introduced that supports journalists to assess user-generated content. Against this backdrop, there will be a discussion on how artificial intelligence can be taught to respect norms and values.
The second part of the symposium will address media-economic questions and unfold how economic mechanisms endanger quality journalism behind the scenes with contents like fake news, (political) content marketing and hate speech.
The symposium will conclude with the question how traditional companies can further develop with the help of new, data-driven business models and which tools can help them to raise data value. Last but not least, the role of education in informatics will be addressed: it needs qualified staff members to bring innovation and creativity in digital media to life.
