Hate Speech on the Internet (Claudia Lampert, Hans-Bredow Institut)

Aggressive, hateful and insulting comments are no longer a rarity on the Internet. At times, an individual person expresses violence verbally, another time people are confronted with waves of aggressive and disrespectful comments in form of so-called shitstorms. The bigger the public and the range of a website or a profile, the higher the influence of such negative comments on the formation of public opinion has to be assessed. In this workshop, we will examine the phenomenon of hate speech in detail and develop ideas for strategies, which address this form of publicly pejorative communication on different levels in a constructive manner and, at the same time, support a responsible and respectful communication culture (online) preventively.
